What is it?
The helmet of a suit of armour is one of the most well-known pieces of armour from the Middle Ages. Medieval helmets were an essential piece of armour for warriors in the Middle Ages. They offered protection for the head, which was a vulnerable target in battle.
The materials used to make medieval helmets were:
- Iron: Iron was the most common material used to make medieval helmets. It was strong and durable, but also heavy.
- Steel: Steel was a lighter and stronger material than iron. It began to be used from the 14th century onwards.
- Bronze: Bronze was a less common material used to make medieval helmets. It was lighter than iron, but also less durable.
Guys
Among the helmets that you can buy in our online helmet and helm store, you will find the following types:
Nasal helmet
The nasal helmet was a form of helmet with a domed or raised center usually formed around a basic skull cap design, with a single strip extending down over the nose to provide additional facial protection.
Great Helm
The great helm was, in its simplest form, a flat-topped steel cylinder that completely covered the head and had only very small openings for the eyes and mouth.
Bascinet
The earliest versions, in the early 15th century, did not have visors and were worn under larger helmets. Small nasal guards were developed to protect the nose and part of the face after the large helm was discarded.
