What is a buckler?
It is a small, sturdy shield, usually made of iron or sandblasted steel to soften the impact. It is entirely covered on the top and bottom by sheets of the same material commonly used for protection against external blows, although it is not very effective against projectiles or throwing weapons.
Buckler shields had a variety of features that made them effective in combat. The small size of the shields made them easy to maneuver, allowing the user to block attacks with ease. The oval or circular shape of the shields provided good coverage, protecting the user from attacks from all angles.
