Around the 16th-17th century
Evolved from the Kettle Hat or Capelina , the Morrión was worn by early Spanish explorers and conquistadors during the 16th and early 17th centuries. It is characterized by the flat brim and a comb, or "crest," running from front to back, which helped deflect blows and strengthened the top. In later years, the crest was enlarged to become a decorative element. The Morrión, while often associated with the Spanish, was also common among infantry soldiers throughout Europe.
