Known by many names, the war bonnet or teapot hat, the open-brimmed, wide-brimmed helmet was the most popular of all helmets for fighting on foot. Its date of origin is uncertain, but we do know that many peoples such as the Vikings wore helmets of this basic style. It remained in use until the 17th century. In fact, it could be said to have remained popular well into the 20th century. Bashford Dean, who designed the British infantry helmet, based his design on the war helmet. The shields formed by the wide brims beat off hand weapons, as well as offering great protection from missiles coming from above. Although it left the face vulnerable, many preferred better vision and air to the protection offered by helmets that covered the face.
