What is leather?

Origins of leather

Leather making is an ancient art that has been practiced for over 7,000 years. Fresh hides were dried in the sun, softened by pounding out animal fats and brains, and preserved with salt and tobacco. Beginning with simple drying and curing techniques, the process of vegetable tanning was developed by the Egyptians and Hebrews about 400 B.C. During the Middle Ages, the Arabs preserved the art of leather making and improved it so much that Morocco and Cordoba, Spain, became highly prized hides. By the 15th century, leather tanning spread to the rest of Europe.
