Hellboy: The Crooked Man — An unmissable premie...

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is the latest film adaptation of the iconic character created by Mike Mignola. Its Spanish theatrical release is scheduled for February 6, 2026, distributed by Vértice 360, following a previous limited run outside the traditional commercial circuit.   The film is not a direct sequel to the versions directed by Guillermo del Toro or the 2019 reboot, but an independent reinterpretation based on a specific story from the original comics.   Plot and narrative atmosphere Set in the 1950s in rural Appalachia, the story follows Hellboy and a rookie Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) agent on a mission that turns dangerous. They face a community haunted by supernatural forces and witchcraft, especially a demonic entity known as the Crooked Man, who seems to have ties to the protagonist's past.   The plot blends elements of horror, fantasy, and action, with a dark, folk-inspired tone, integrating the aesthetics of Mignola's original comics and the influence of North American folklore.   Main cast and creative team The film is directed by Brian Taylor, known for his work in action cinema, and the screenplay is a collaboration between Christopher Golden, Mike Mignola, and Taylor himself.   The cast includes: Jack Kesy as Hellboy, the half-demon protagonist. Adeline Rudolph as Bobbie Jo Song, a BPRD agent. Jefferson White playing Tom Ferrell, a key ally. Leah McNamara and Joseph Marcell complete the main cast. This approach opts for relatively new faces instead of big-name stars, which reinforces a more contained proposal less geared towards commercial spectacle.   Where was it filmed? The film was shot between March and May 2023, a period during which most of the scenes were filmed. Later, additional recordings were made to correct details or add new shots.   Although the story is set in the rural forests of the Appalachian Mountains of the United States in the 1950s, its locations were recreated indoors, in studio exteriors, and in natural environments in Bulgaria.   The staging opts for a more intimate style, prioritizing atmosphere and mystery over the large action sequences present in previous adaptations.   Critical and public reception Hellboy: The Crooked Man has received a mixed reception, with no clear consensus among critics and viewers. The diversity of opinions is due, in part, to limited prior screenings, which allowed a reduced audience to offer assessments before the general release in Spanish cinemas.   Positive reviews Among the favorable opinions, the following stand out: fidelity to the dark and demonological tone of the original comics; the commitment to a more intimate approach, away from conventional superhero cinema; an atmosphere consistent with the adapted story.   Negative reviews The most critical reviews point to: an irregular rhythm, with sections that reduce narrative tension; execution problems, understood as a poorly cohesive integration between script, direction, and staging; a narrative development that does not exploit its full potential.   Regarding the visuals, especially when compared to the versions directed by Guillermo del Toro, the following are mentioned: correct but limited special effects and cinematography; a sober production design.   An interesting return for the red demon Hellboy: The Crooked Man is not just another superhero movie. It is a version that prioritizes the sinister tone of the original comics and offers a different interpretation of the character, which may be appealing to those looking for a less conventional adaptation.

Hollywood and "Invisible Plagiarism": Films wit...

Japanese animated cinema, and anime itself, has exerted a profound and lasting influence on contemporary audiovisual storytelling. Works such as Princess Mononoke (1997), directed by Hayao Miyazaki, for example, redefined the environmental and anti-war message, establishing a unique visual, symbolic, and narrative language.   Over time, several Hollywood productions have notably replicated some elements of anime, reusing narrative structures, images, and concepts without explicit acknowledgment. Thus, the reuse of ideas proposed by these oriental animations without such acknowledgment is known as "invisible plagiarism," and it manifests itself with particular force in several emblematic cases that continue to generate debate.   This article analyzes two representative cases in which, for many, the parallels go beyond mere inspiration, demonstrating the depth of the influence of artists like Miyazaki and Tezuka on global animation.   Snow White and the Huntsman vs. Princess Mononoke Snow White and the Huntsman (2012) was presented as a dark reinterpretation of the European fairy tale, but it shows clear parallels with Princess Mononoke.   In both works, the forest is not a passive setting, but a living, conscious, and morally active entity. When Snow White enters alone, the trees and roots seem to react to her presence, just as in Mononoke, where the forest responds to armed humans through unnatural movements and oppressive lights, reinforcing narrative tension.   The Kodama, small luminous creatures from Mononoke, find their parallel in the beings of light that accompany Snow White, indicating acceptance by nature and reinforcing the protagonist's spiritual connection with the environment.   The scene in which Snow White is "blessed" by the forest reproduces almost shot by shot the sequence in which Princess Mononoke moves among deer under the Shishigami, reflecting a deep and symbolic interaction between character and ecosystem.   The huntsman plays a similar role to Ashitaka, mediating between the human and natural worlds, visually reinforced by shots that show reflection and isolation.   Nature's response to human corruption is presented almost identically: organic hostility to environmental imbalance, where the forest acts as a living organism that protects its balance, conveying an ecological and moral message that goes beyond traditional narrative.   The Lion King vs. Kimba, the White Lion Kimba, the White Lion (Jungle Taitei), created by Osamu Tezuka in 1965, is one of the foundational works of modern anime. The series and its subsequent films feature a young lion who must assume leadership after his father's death, facing moral conflicts, internal betrayals, and the tension between tradition and human progress.   The Lion King (1994) develops a surprisingly similar premise. Simba, like Kimba, is a cub destined to reign, marked by his father's death and forced into exile before returning to reclaim his place.   Although Disney has repeatedly denied any direct influence, the coincidences go beyond the basic narrative scheme.   There are widely documented visual parallels: scenes where the protagonist observes the kingdom from an elevated rock, the spiritual appearance of the father in the sky, the antagonist with dark features and a facial scar, and even almost identical shots of animals running across the savannah. In Kimba, these images appear decades earlier, with an already consolidated visual language.   Symbolism also coincides. Both works present leadership as an ethical responsibility rather than an inherited right. The king is not one who dominates, but one who maintains the balance between species, a recurring concept in Tezuka's work and central to Simba's narrative arc.   The controversy intensified in Japan, where the similarity was perceived as evident. There, Disney's lack of official recognition was interpreted as cultural appropriation, especially considering Tezuka's historical relevance as "the father of manga and anime."   Coincidence or plagiarism? Had you noticed these parallels? What do you think? Coincidence or plagiarism? And if it was inspired, do you think it's appropriate to keep the original story that inspires the works hidden just because it's aimed at a different target audience, or would it deserve, at least, a mention?

J. R. R. Tolkien: Keys to His Work and the Cult...

In the month of J. R. R. Tolkien's birth, it is particularly pertinent to delve into the aspects that make his work unique in modern fantasy. Beyond The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien built a literary universe with historical, linguistic, and emotional depth rarely matched. Analyzing these elements helps us understand why his cultural legacy remains alive and continues to attract millions of readers worldwide.   Tolkien as a Creator of Languages (Not Just a Writer) Before he was a novelist, Tolkien was a philologist. His passion for ancient languages led him to create complete languages such as Quenya and Sindarin, with their own grammar, phonetics, and historical evolution. In his case, the stories were born to give context to the languages, and not the other way around. This linguistic obsession provides an exceptional sense of realism to Middle-earth and distinguishes his work from other epic fantasy offerings.   The Invention of a Mythology for England Tolkien stated on several occasions that he wished to create a mythology of his own for England, comparable to Greek or Norse mythology. The Silmarillion acts as this foundational myth, establishing gods, heroes, ages of the world, and great tragedies. Middle-earth can be read as a mythical Europe, prior to known history, deeply rooted in Anglo-Saxon tradition.   His Experience in World War I and the Emotions Behind the Narrated Battles Tolkien fought in the Battle of the Somme in 1916, one of the most devastating battles of World War I. This experience shaped his vision of conflict and heroism. In his battles, there is no glorification of war, but rather weariness, fear, camaraderie, and loss. That real-life experience allowed him to describe human emotions with an intensity that remains credible and moving.   Nature, Industrialization, and Loss One of the central themes in Tolkien's work is the clash between nature and dehumanized industrialization. Ravaged forests, blackened lands, and machines serving power represent the loss of an ancient world. This conflict, present in places like Isengard or Mordor, reflects a profoundly modern and surprisingly relevant concern.   Humble Heroism In Tolkien, the true hero is not the strongest or the most powerful. Humble heroism is embodied in simple characters like the hobbits, who are able to resist thanks to loyalty, perseverance, and compassion. This vision breaks with the classic archetype of the invincible hero and provides a deeply human moral dimension.   Moral Values Without Sermons: Evil Corrupts, It Does Not Create Morality in Tolkien is clear, but never explicit. Evil does not create; it only corrupts what already exists. This idea permeates all his work and manifests itself in the degradation of characters, creatures, and territories. These are universal values naturally integrated into the narrative, without the need for moralizing speeches.   Gandalf and the Figure of the Wandering Sage Gandalf combines influences from Odin, of Norse mythology, and Merlin from Arthurian tradition. He is the wandering sage who advises, guides, and directs, but never imposes his will. His power lies in knowledge and experience, not domination, reinforcing the idea of ethical leadership.   The Value of Maps and Geography Tolkien's maps are not merely decorative. The geography of Middle-earth shapes the history, journeys, and conflicts. Distances, climates, and borders are carefully considered, which provides coherence and credibility to the narrative.   Time, Decay, and the End of Ages The passage of time and the decay of ancient worlds are constant themes in Tolkien's work. Each age signifies a loss, a farewell to magic and the extraordinary, reinforcing a deeply European melancholic tone.   The Cultural Legacy and its Current Influence For all the reasons mentioned above, Tolkien's cultural legacy remains immense. His influence extends to literature, film, video games, role-playing, and popular culture. Understanding these key aspects explains why, decades later, his work continues to gain new readers and admirers.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: the great fanta...

The Game of Thrones universe is expanding again with a new project that promises to captivate fans of epic fantasy: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. This series, based on George R.R. Martin's Dunk and Egg tales, will premiere in Spain on January 19, 2026, after a postponement that moved its original 2025 launch to the start of the new year. The production arrives with the intention of offering a fresh look at the world of Westeros, exploring unexplored territories, characters, and corners one hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones.   What is “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”? A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a medieval fantasy series that adapts the novellas known as Tales of Dunk and Egg, written by George R.R. Martin. Unlike other installments in the universe, such as House of the Dragon, this production focuses on the relationship between a humble knight and his young squire in a world where the Iron Throne has not yet experienced the brutal wars that will be seen in the future. With a tone that blends adventure, honor, and survival, the series promises to balance action with character development and the politics that characterize the original work.   Release date in Spain and broadcast format The release date in Spain for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set for January 19, 2026, on streaming platforms that offer franchise content and on the channel that holds the broadcasting rights for Game of Thrones spin-off series. This date was confirmed by various media outlets and official announcements regarding fantasy series releases for this year.   Each episode is part of a first season composed of six installments that will be broadcast weekly, following a cinematic format that favors immersion in the story.   The central plot and main characters The series follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, a landless and penniless knight who, nevertheless, possesses a solid moral code and unwavering determination. Alongside him is Aegon Targaryen, known as Egg, a young squire with a noble past who is forced to hide his identity. The relationship between this duo, marked by loyalty, friendship, and the trials of the road, forms the heart and soul of the narrative.   The adventures of these characters lead them to cross kingdoms, participate in jousts, face bandits, and unravel court intrigues, all while trying to find their place in an environment that values lineage more than individual worth. This series uses this contrast to explore themes such as identity, honor, and social expectations in a fantastical medieval world.   Production and outstanding features The production of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been meticulous down to the smallest detail, with an approach that combines classic elements of epic fantasy with a more intimate and human narrative. The settings, costumes, and atmosphere aim to transport the viewer to a pre-revolutionary era of Westeros, long before the explosion of violence that would come with later events in the franchise.   Furthermore, although the general tone remains faithful to the canons of medieval fantasy, the series introduces moments of humor, camaraderie, and reflection that distinguish it from other productions in the same universe, bringing a lighter sense of adventure in some passages without losing the seriousness of the central conflicts.   Expectations among fans and the community The community of Game of Thrones fans and George R.R. Martin's works has enthusiastically received the announcement of this spin-off. Expectations focus on how the series will faithfully adapt the stories of Dunk and Egg, and how the six-episode format will allow for a deeper exploration of characters who, until now, were secondary in the grand narrative of Westeros. Many fans hope that this production will expand the universe, offer new perspectives on the politics and social structure of the Seven Kingdoms, and open the door to future seasons based on the other tales of this literary saga.   Overall, a promising premiere A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms arrives in Spain on January 19, 2026, as one of the big bets in the medieval fantasy genre for the coming months. With a story that combines adventure, friendship, honor, and conflict, this prequel offers both veteran fans and new viewers another reason to immerse themselves in the vast world of Westeros. Its premiere not only expands the narrative within the Game of Thrones franchise but also promises to be a memorable production for its way of exploring complex characters, moral dilemmas, and the changing nature of an evolving world.

To talk about the anniversary of Dragon Ball is to talk about one of the fundamental pillars of anime and manga worldwide. Since its debut, the work created by Akira Toriyama not only revolutionized Japanese animation, but also defined the childhood and adolescence of millions of viewers in Spain and around the world. Each Dragon Ball anniversary becomes a collective celebration that recalls its cultural impact, its evolution, and the enduring relevance of a saga that continues to captivate new generations.   The birth of a global phenomenon Dragon Ball originally premiered as a manga on January 10, 1984, in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine, and its anime adaptation followed shortly after, consolidating a narrative style that would forever change the shōnen genre. The combination of martial arts, humor, adventure, and fantasy created a unique formula that immediately resonated with the audience.   In Spain, the series achieved massive popularity during the 90s, becoming a true television phenomenon. Characters like Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Piccolo became recognizable icons even outside the realm of anime, something reserved for very few Japanese franchises.   Evolution of the saga over the years Over time, Dragon Ball expanded its universe with different stages that marked various generations. Dragon Ball began as an adventure series centered on an ingenuous, extraordinarily strong child of extraterrestrial origin who travels the world in search of the dragon balls. With a lighthearted tone that blended humor, martial arts, and fantasy, the story quickly captivated audiences and laid the groundwork for a constantly growing universe. Dragon Ball Z elevated the action and epic scale, introducing legendary battles and unforgettable villains like Frieza, Cell, and Majin Buu. Later, Dragon Ball GT offered an alternative vision that, although divisive, expanded the series' imaginary. The arrival of Dragon Ball Super marked the definitive rebirth of the franchise in the modern era. New characters, transformations, and multiversal tournaments brought the saga back to the forefront of current anime, proving that its essence remains fully relevant.   Dragon Ball in Spain: cultural and generational impact The Dragon Ball anniversary holds special significance in Spain, where the series is part of the collective imagination. Its broadcast marked a before and after in the way Japanese animation was consumed, paving the way for other great anime titles. Conventions, special events, screenings, and merchandising continue to celebrate Toriyama's legacy. Furthermore, new generations are discovering the series through streaming platforms, keeping the flame of interest and nostalgia alive.   The legacy of Akira Toriyama Akira Toriyama not only created a successful story but also a visual and narrative language that influenced countless subsequent authors. His drawing style, his sense of humor, and his ability to balance action and emotion defined the DNA of modern shonen.   The Dragon Ball anniversary is also a tribute to its creator, whose work transcended cultural and linguistic borders, becoming a universal benchmark for entertainment. This is not just a commemorative date, but confirmation that we are looking at an immortal work.   Decades after its debut, the saga continues to generate conversation, emotion, and admiration around the world, and in Spain, its impact remains intact, reminding us that Dragon Ball is not just an anime, but a cultural phenomenon that will continue to accompany and unite future generations.

January sets the anime's course: fame, memory, ...

January 2026 is shaping up to be a pivotal month for anime, with releases combining mature storytelling, deep emotions, and character development. Three returns stand out in particular: Hell’s Paradise Season 2, Oshi no Ko Season 3, and Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2. Each addresses distinct themes, from extreme survival and violence to fame, truth, and reflection on time, solidifying the winter season as a must-watch for anime fans.   January 11 - Hell’s Paradise – Season 2 Gabimaru returns to the cursed island in search of the elixir of immortality. The series, produced by MAPPA, intensifies the violence and horror, pitting the protagonist against grotesque creatures and supernatural threats.   The first season presented a brutal world where survival was a privilege, combining extreme action, Eastern philosophy, and reflections on life and death. In this second installment, Gabimaru not only fights for survival but also becomes entangled in a celestial conflict that threatens the natural balance of the island.   The stylized animation and choreographed combat reinforce the tension, consolidating this return as one of the most anticipated of the year.   January 14 - Oshi no Ko – Season 3 Ruby and B-Komachi face the price of fame and truth within the Japanese entertainment industry. The third season delves deeper into Ruby's obsession with uncovering the secrets surrounding Ai Hoshino and B-Komachi's full exposure as an idol.   The series combines psychological drama, media manipulation, and loss of identity, showing how truth can be as destructive as lies. This season expands its focus to television, theater, and reality shows, highlighting the emotional cost of success and social pressure.   Oshi no Ko confirms itself as a phenomenon by dismantling idol anime clichés and exploring the consequences of its characters' decisions.   January 16 - Frieren: Beyond Journey's End – Season 2 Frieren resumes her journey to Ende with an introspective and melancholic approach. The second season delves into memory, loss, and the value of shared time, as the characters face more subtle but emotionally complex threats. Fern and Stark gain prominence, offering new perspectives and reinforcing the generational contrast.   Madhouse's animation maintains its sobriety, with contemplative landscapes and the use of silence that accompanies the narrative without being overpowering.   Frieren offers a reflective fantasy experience, where the unhurried pace highlights the maturity of the story and the internal development of the characters.   Comparison of the three premieres: What do they have in common? Although they belong to different genres, Hell’s Paradise, Oshi no Ko, and Frieren represent the evolution of contemporary anime towards mature and emotionally demanding plots. Hell’s Paradise combines action and horror with dilemmas of life and death; Oshi no Ko examines fame, lies, and identity in the entertainment world; Frieren reflects on time, memory, and personal growth. All three series feature characters who face real consequences of their decisions, transcending superficial entertainment and consolidating winter anime as a profound experience.   2026 starts strong for Japanese animation fans January 2026 offers an outstanding start to the year for anime. (You can also find the list of must-watch anime premieres in January 2026 on Crunchyroll.   The returns of Hell’s Paradise Season 2, Oshi no Ko Season 3, and Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Season 2 guarantee intense action, psychological drama, and reflective fantasy.   Mature stories, complex characters, and emotional narratives elevate the winter season to a higher level, confirming that current anime is committed to quality, ambition, and emotional connection with viewers.   Have you seen these anime yet? If not, you still have time for a marathon of their previous seasons.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Anticipated return with Season ...

The anime that marked a generation The third season of Jujutsu Kaisen has become one of the most anticipated anime premieres of 2026 and represents a turning point for the series. After two seasons that redefined the modern shōnen genre with intense combat, magic, and deep character development, this new installment kicks off globally on January 8, 2026, on Crunchyroll, taking fans to the heart of the Culling Game Arc.   For millions of Japanese anime fans, this premiere is not just a continuation, but the expansion of a narrative universe that has influenced contemporary anime culture, with characters like Yuji Itadori, Megumi Fushiguro, and Yuta Okkotsu at the epicenter of an increasingly dark and emotionally ambitious story.   A journey through previous seasons The first season of Jujutsu Kaisen served to establish the rules of its universe and the central conflict of the series, introducing Yuji Itadori as a protagonist trapped between duty and personal damnation after becoming linked to the world of curses. From the beginning, the series stood out for its darker tone, direct pacing, and a staging that prioritized the emotional impact of the fights.   As for the story, we see Itadori who, on impulse, ingests a part of the soul of an ancient curse, Sukuna, and although he is able to contain it, he is marked as a danger by those who rule the world of sorcerers. However, his death sentence is postponed thanks to the intervention of the one called the most powerful sorcerer, Gojo, who takes him under his care and joins him with Megumi Fushiguro and Nobara Kugisaki, as one of his first-year apprentices.   The second season expanded on the previous one and took the story to a much more extreme level, showing how the decisions made up to that point unleash an uncontrollable chaos. The events in Shibuya marked a before and after in the narrative, permanently altering the balance of the Jujutsu Kaisen world and the psychology of its characters.   In these chapters, the story revolves around a curse that has taken over the body of Gojo's old friend, Geto, the antagonist of the first season. He has gathered a group of special curses to rebel with the aim of changing the human world as we know it, and he has managed to seal Gojo! Now his students find themselves needing to free him, even with the sorcery world against them, facing the increasingly blurred line between good and evil, right and wrong.   These episodes solidified the series as one of the most influential in the genre, standing out for its high-quality animation, emotional narrative, and spectacular combat scenes. The combination of dark fantasy, personal drama, and strategic battles has been key to attracting both manga fans and new viewers.   Expectations for the third season Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 is scheduled to premiere on January 8, 2026, on Crunchyroll with the beginning of the initial chapter of the Culling Game Arc, after Gojo is trapped and a brutal new conflict erupts between sorcerers and unleashed curses.   This arc is widely considered by the anime community to be one of the most intense in the original manga, due to its narrative scale, the introduction of new key characters, and the complexity of the battles. In addition, it is speculated that the season will be divided into two parts, maintaining the weekly episode pace that has been a hallmark of the series.   Fans expect MAPPA's animation, the studio behind the series, to maintain its reputation for visual quality and fluidity in fight scenes, as well as a greater emphasis on the internal conflicts of characters like Yuji, Megumi, and Yuta, whose evolution has been fundamental to the anime's success.   New narrative elements and characters The Culling Game Arc promises to introduce narrative heights never before seen in Jujutsu Kaisen, with confrontations that can change the balance of this anime's universe.   In addition to the usual protagonists, this season will expand the cast with figures who, until now, had only appeared in the manga, generating great expectations among the global anime fan community.   The official previews released have shown more polished animation, a darker tone, and conflicts that explore not only physical struggle but deep ethical and psychological issues, aspects that many fans eagerly await.   Cultural influence and community reaction Anticipation on social networks and specialized forums shows that this premiere is one of the most talked about among shōnen anime fans. Debates about theories, plot predictions, and possible twists have dominated platforms like Reddit and specialized networks, underscoring Jujutsu Kaisen's influence as a cultural phenomenon within anime entertainment.   The arrival of season 3 also revitalizes interest in the franchise as a whole, increasing consumption of previous seasons, the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie, and official merchandise in specialized stores. A decisive new stage for a landmark anime The premiere of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 marks an important milestone for contemporary anime. With a solid global fanbase, broad anticipation for the Culling Game Arc, and the narrative momentum this continuation offers, this new installment promises not only to meet expectations but to further raise the genre's standard.   With a combination of action, drama, character evolution, and high-quality animation, this season is shaping up to be one of the most outstanding anime premieres of 2026, further consolidating the legacy of one of the most influential series of the last decade.
