The helmet, which began to be seen on the battlefield as early as the 12th century in its earliest forms, proved to be a winning design that was used for almost the next 3 centuries. A simple piece of equipment to make and as its long use shows, useful for the protection of cavalry. Usually worn over the mail coif, or over a helmet or casque it was usually made of 4 pieces riveted together and with a flat baldric. It usually had a fixed visor, usually with a fierce appearance that helped to increase the already intimidating appearance of a charging knight.
For the design of this helmet we were inspired by a statue from the Olite cathedral dating from the mid-13th century. This type of helmet was commonly used from the mid-13th century, beginning of the 14th century, as can be seen in some documents such as the Codex Manesse, the Crusader Bible or the Cantigas de Santa María.
