The helmet, which began to be seen on the battlefield as early as the 12th century in its earliest forms, proved to be a winning design that was used for almost the next 3 centuries. A simple piece of equipment to make and as its long use shows, useful for the protection of cavalry. Usually worn over the mail coif, or over a helmet or casque, it was usually made from 4 pieces riveted together and had a flat baldric. It usually had a fixed visor, usually with a fierce appearance that helped to increase the already intimidating appearance of a charging knight.
For the design of our helmet we were inspired by an original piece from the mid-13th century that was found in Pomerania and is currently in the Historisches Museum in Berlin. This type of helmet was commonly used from the mid-13th century, beginning of the 14th century, as can be seen in some documents such as the Codex Manesse, the Crusader Bible or the Cantigas de Santa María.
