This medieval long dress made of cotton fabric is tight-fitting and has contrasting details. The side seams are open from the hip to the upper arm and are provided with laces, so that the women's dress can be individually adapted to the body. These side openings are called hell windows, as they allow a view of the undergarment and were not welcomed by the church. The laces are provided with metal nest tips and can be easily threaded through the embroidered eyelets. In the skirt part, so-called geren (fabric wedges) are used laterally and centrally, which create a generous hemaculus width. The flared trumpet sleeves and the decorative stitching on the sleeve doto and around the hell windows give the dress a noble character. The cut of the dress is typical of a bliaut (or bliaud) and is based on the
Fashion from the 11th to the 13th century. While women's tunics before this time were rather loose and concealed the body's curves, clothing was now becoming increasingly body-hugging. The bliaut was originally a courtier's garment, as exposed sleeves were impractical at work. Over time, however, this form of clothing also developed in the middle class, but then mainly with narrowly cut sleeves. The bliaut was not only worn by ladies, men also wore this upper garment, but later in a knee-length version.
Characteristic of the bliaut are the windows of hell in the waist area and the trumpet sleeves. The windows of hell initially looked more like large armpits and became larger and larger over time until they finally ended at the hip. The trumpet sleeves also took on exaggerated shapes, so that they were partly floor-length. Usually the bliaut was combined with an undergarment, a veil and a narrow belt. Depictions of a bliaut from that period can be found, for example, in the fresco of Sant'Elena in the Basilica of San
Lorenzo in Milan and in the Hortus Deliciarum, an encyclopedic work from the late 12th century.
