This loose-fitting, floor-length medieval dress is made of light cotton. Laterally inserted rings (wedge-shaped pieces of fabric) give the skirt part a generous hem width. The neckline is quite wide, so that the undergarment remains hidden under the upper garment. The special cut of the sleeve holds tight to the upper arm and is provided with a drawstring for individual adjustment. The sleeve dome is very wide, so that the typical trumpet shape is created. Over the undergarment you can wear a surcot, a cotehardie or a bliaut.

Particularly wide-cut sleeves appeared in the 12th century. They were not only fashionable, but also a status symbol, because wearing such wide sleeves was not suitable for everyday wear by workers. In order to protect their precious, often richly decorated upper garments with a body-hugging fit, both men and women wore a simple underdress with trumpet sleeves underneath in the 12th and 13th centuries. This was usually not visible, as it was considered indecorous. Depictions of wide-cut sleeves from the 12th century can be found, for example, in the fresco of Sant'Elena in the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Milan and in the illustrated encyclopedic work Hortus Peliciarum (c. 1180).
In the 15th century, trumpet-sleeved undergarments were worn under a cotehardie of
short sleeve (a tight-fitting dress with laces or buttons down the centre front). With this style of wear, the undergarment was visible. Depictions of wide-cut sleeves from the period can be found e.g. in Gerard David's painting Madonna, Surrounded by Saints.
