With the rise of towns and the bourgeoisie in the late Middle Ages, the demand for a weapon of civil defense also grew. At this time, only the nobility could carry double-edged swords. For the common man, therefore, the so-called Lange knife was developed - an extended version of the medieval peasant army. In contrast to the Sabre-type Big Knife, which came out at the same time, the blade was single-edged and straight. Often, however, the Lange knife had a so-called cutting edge at the tip, so that it was double-edged at the end.

This long knife by Ulfberth is modeled on a well-preserved original, which was in the collection of Crown Prince Ernst August of Hanover, but was auctioned in 2012.

The forged quillons are curved in the shape of a S and have a large parierring on the obverse. The strong fishing rod is riveted to the solid wrought iron pommel. The wooden handles are attached with seven iron ball studs.

The upper half of the blade is triple grooved. It is hand forged from EN45 spring steel, oil hardened and tempered to approximately 48-50 HRC. However, the cutting edge is not sharpened.

The sword comes with a matching leather sheath.
