This reconstruction of medieval chainmail sleeves by Ulfberth is largely based on historical models. They cover not only the arm, but also the adjacent shoulder areas of the chest and back.
Chainmail sleeves are made from rings with a diameter of only 6 mm. According to the original templates, it consists of a series of riveted rings (round rivets) and a series of stamped rings. Due to the extremely small ring diameter, these chainmail shirts could be made from steel only 1 mm thick without losing their strength. As a result, a weight reduction of about 30 - 35% is achieved.
We shortened this type of mail to RM (English = Roman Maille), as it was very popular among the Celts and Romans (Hamata). However, this ring armour was in use throughout the Late Middle Ages.
