A helmet brim is a chain mail that was attached in the Middle Ages as additional protection for the neck and shoulders to a helmet. The preferred types of helmets here were the Nasalhelm, but especially in the late medieval period the bascinet and its variant, the Hundsgugel.
This Ulfberth brunf chain has a genuine saw-tooth braided edge and a sewn-in strip of thick cowhide. Mounting holes for the helmet must be built into these leather reinforcements all around.
For attachment to helmets such as Hundsgugeln or pelvic hoods (Bascinet).
The RM mesh chain
It is made of rings with a diameter of only 6 mm. According to the original templates, it consists of a series of riveted rings (round rivets) and a series of stamped rings. Due to the extremely small ring diameter, these chainmail shirts could be made of steel with a material thickness of only 1 mm, without losing their strength. This achieves a weight reduction of about 30-35%.
We shorten this Geflechtart RM (English R = Oman M de aille) since they were already very popular with the Celts and Romans (Hamata). However, this ring armour was in use throughout the Late Middle Ages.
