The Gjermundbu helmet was discovered in 1943 during excavations of a Viking Age burial mound. It has been reconstructed by experts and is now on display at the Museum of National Antiquities (Oldsaksamlinga) in Oslo. The helmet is dated to 970 AD.
It is an example of a Viking helmet, which ensures the fighter a good historical protection and at the same time a sufficient field of vision. The helmet and in particular its shoulder straps also show the close relationship with the helmet group of the so-called Nordic comb helmets.
There are now a few replicas of the Gjermundbuhelmes on the market, but only a few are as close to the original and at the same time offer the protection as this battle-ready replica from Ulfberth. The helmet's bell consists of two parts and is made of 2 mm thick steel and welded together. Four hand-forged, criss-crossed iron bands (so-called clips) are riveted onto the helmet's bell, which additionally strengthen the helmet. Also riveted are the hand-made glasses made of 2 mm thick steel, a face shield that reaches the wearer well below the nose. The goggles were provided with the same chisel marks, which the original also has.
The helmet has a round ring bristle chain (RRR), because remains of a Vernieten Brünne were also found in the find from 1943. The forged tip of the helmet is only screwed on and can be easily removed, for example for safe combat.
The helmet is deliberately not polished to a high gloss, but has an artificially aged surface, which underlines its authenticity. It has a very high-quality, riveted, adjustable padded entrance with a chinstrap and a sturdy leather bronze buckle.
This magnificent helmet reconstruction is a very interesting and affordable piece of tangible history for both the collector and the Viking Age reenactor.
