An Aventail is a chain mail that was attached in the Middle Ages as an additional neck and shoulder protection to a helmet. The preferred types of helmet here were the nasal cap, but especially the late medieval pelvic hood and its variant, the Hundsgugel.
This Ulfberth chain brim has an authentic sawtooth braided edge and a sewn-in strip of thick cowhide. In these leather strips, mounting holes for the helmet must be incorporated by the customer.
The FRW type braid:
This flat braid is made of flat chain rings, which are closed by wedge rivets (triangular rivets).
This type of braid is typical of ring armour from the late Middle Ages in Europe. The braid is 4 in 1.
We call this FRW network (Engl. = Flat Ring W rivets edge).
