This calf-length tabard is made of sturdy cotton. It has a straight cut and a waist-high side slit. The front and back are also provided with a slightly shorter slit in the middle. The classic cross of the Order of St. John or the Order of Malta (Cross of St. John , also: Maltese Cross ) is applied to the chest.
The tabard (also called tabard , armour dress , tappert or surcot ) emerged in the 12th century and was worn by knights over armour or chain armour. Firstly, it protected the wearer from direct sunlight on the battlefield and, through the various colour combinations, it made it clear who was the enemy and who was the friend in the confusion of battle. Many crusaders wore tabards to identify themselves as crusaders.
There are numerous depictions of medieval tunics, for example in the Maciejowski Bible (also known as the Crusader Bible ), a medieval picture Bible from the 13th century, and in the Codex Manesse , a song manuscript from the early 14th century.
The simple, straight cut is typical of the tunic. For an authentic look, we recommend combining it with a leather belt.
