Japanese two-handed sword

The Nodachi is 140 cm long and has a 100 cm long single-edged blade. It has a large oval crossguard and a small rounded pommel. The oval shape of the hilt helps to steer the blade intuitively, and it is adorned with menu bindings made from top grain leather. The menuki-bind is double layered and made of contrasting colours, creating a diamond pattern.

Nodachi were large, but unwieldy weapons. With their long blade, they were somewhat at odds with bushido styles, and thus quickly became symbols of skill and status. As they required extensive training to be used properly, they were primarily used for duels or in the hands of cavalrymen. While on the battlefield, they were made to look dangerous in the hands of elite troops with a fearsome reputation.
