This loose-cut, floor-length surcot is made of solid cotton fabric (canvas). The solid canvas fabric (canvas) makes the medieval dress robust and heavy and therefore particularly suitable for spring and autumn. The hem, armpits and neckline are covered with a fine woven cotton fabric. The armpits are cut very generously and end at hip height. From the hip, so-called geren (wedge-shaped pieces of fabric) are inserted laterally, which gives the surcot sufficient width. This overdress is an authentic reconstruction of a 14th century surcot and was worn by ladies of simple positions.
The Surcot, which was originally worn by men, was a popular dress for
The Surcot was worn by women from the 13th century onwards. As the name suggests, it was worn over the Cotte. In order to give sufficient width to the skirt part, it was customary to use side wedges of fabric. A special form was the sleeveless Surcot (also called Suckenie), which enjoyed great popularity among ladies of all stands. Initially, the armpits were cut normally, but over time they became wider and wider and eventually reached down to the hip. The church did not like this at all, hence the term hell window or devil's window for these large armpits. Under the sleeveless Surcot, Frau wore a long-sleeved cotte. Numerous depictions of the Surcot can be found in manuscripts of the time, e.g. in the manuscript Roman de la Rose from 1348 or in the Speculum humanoe salvationis from 1360 (sheet 37).
