The surcoat served, among other things, to identify the knight who wore it. Unlike the sergeants, this one was white and only had a cross on the side of the chest.
Among its many other uses was that of protecting the knight from the elements, since for example during the Crusades knights were stifled by the heat and overheating of their chain mail. There are even cases in which the surcoat has saved the life of a knight, as the chronicle tells how an arrow got caught in the loose fabric of the garment, greatly reducing the force of the shot.
