Templar sergeant surcoat
The surcoat served, among other things, to identify the knight who wore it. In the case of the Templar Order, sergeants usually wore the vest in black with a red cross. According to Templar rules, the cross had to be visible on both sides, among other things, to differentiate their sergeants from members of other orders.
Among its many other uses was that of protecting the knight from the elements, since for example during the Crusades knights were stifled by the heat and overheating of their chain mail. There are even cases in which the surcoat has saved the life of a knight, as the chronicle tells how an arrow got caught in the loose fabric of the garment, greatly reducing the force of the shot.
