Every Viking chieftain was familiar, if not an expert, with the sword, shield, spear and axe. But these are long, heavy and often bulky weapons that were not always within reach, so they almost universally carried a large sax for round-the-clock protection. Suspended from the belt at the front or back (where it did not interfere with other weapons such as their sword or hand axe), it was instantly available if suddenly attacked and was often used in conjunction with other weapons.

Although most Sax blades resemble the Cold Steel® Sax Lumberjack profile (Product No. 88HUA) with a straight edge and sloping point, there have been popular variations such as the back-to-back Chieftan Sax Cold Steel® is introducing here.

Forged from high carbon steel with a hard spring temper and satin polish, it features a broken-back blade profile, where the line formed by the spine rises and then drops abruptly to the point of giving the illusion of a clip-point bowie knife while in reality it predates the bowie by many centuries! Since the Chieftan's Sax is intended to be a weapon first and a tool a distant second, it comes with a modestly sized brass guard that serves to prevent one's fingers from sliding forward over the blade while offering a modicum of protection from opposing weapons.
But it’s the Chieftan sax’s neck that Cold Steel® is especially proud of. Intricately hand-carved in deep relief in a link pattern, it’s visually stunning and complements the matching brass guard and pommel.

Each Chieftan sax comes with a period-correct brown leather sheath with brass accents, leather lace stitching, and period-correct leather straps.

Steel with high
1055 Carbon Content The carbon content and lean alloying of this case-hardening steel make it a very strong material that avoids much of the brittleness commonly associated with high carbon materials. Particularly suited to blades requiring impact resistance, it is often seen in large fixed blades and swords.
