The Holy Lance (also Lance of Longinus, Lance of Maurice or Lance of Destiny) is the oldest piece of imperial regalia of the kings and emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. It supposedly contains a piece of a nail from the cross of Christ (Holy Nail). According to legend, the lance belonged to Maurice, the leader of the Thebaic Legion, or, according to other sources, to the Roman captain Longinus, who used it to check the death of Jesus so that he would also be soaked in his holy blood.
At times it was the most important piece of insignia, later the imperial crown took its place. The spearhead was kept in a cavity within the crossbar of the Reichskreuz. A ruler who possessed this spear was considered invincible. It was the visible sign that his power emanated from God and that he was the representative of Christ.
