The Viking short-pointed spear is a typical example of a spear of Celtic origin that reached Scandinavia. The short blade, by nature more stable, stiffer and break-proof, was quite capable of piercing the common armour of the time.
The ornate Hanwei spearheads designed by Paul Chen reflect the creative blend of Viking arts and crafts weapons. At that time, spearheads were often decorated with elaborate patterns that were made with the aid of the niello -generated technique. An alloy of different metals (especially silver) was mixed with sulfur. The mixture was rubbed into previously scratched patterns and then baked. The etched areas that had been treated with this mixture remained black and the rest of the surface was polished to a high gloss. Although less alchemy comes into play in the manufacturing process used by Hanwei for the decorative pattern, the result is a shiny, permanent effect similar to a niello .
