In the 13th century people strove to combine edged and percussion weapons. During the 14th century a hook was placed on the back to draw enemy cavalry off their horses. As a result infantry suddenly became a serious rival to cavalry. The bill originated from the normal sickle used for harvesting. These weapons were for average infantry soldiers and could be cheaply made. Around the 15th century weapons like this were used all over Europe.
