The spearhead offered here has a narrow, tapered blade that was designed to pierce chain material. On the battlefield, the Scandinavians often carried with them a few light javelins, which they held in the same hand as the shield when attacking. As soon as the enemy was close enough, these spears were thrown and the warriors could swing the sword or axe unhindered in the ensuing hand-to-hand combat.
The ornate Hanwei spearheads designed by Paul Chen reflect the creative blend of Viking arts and crafts weapons. Back then, they were often decorated with elaborate patterns that could be created using the Niello technique . An alloy of different metals (especially silver) was mixed with sulfur. The mixture was rubbed into pre-scratched patterns and then baked. The etched areas that had been treated with this mixture remained black, and the rest of the surface was polished to a high sheen. Although less alchemy comes into play in the manufacturing process used by Hanwei for the decorative pattern, the result is a shiny, permanent niello -like effect .
