Reproduction of a flintlock pistol, made of wood and metal, simulated loading and firing mechanism.
Flintlock pistols were the most commonly used weapon by pirates in the 18th century. They had a flint that, when struck against the spigot, produced a spark that ignited the gunpowder. All of these weapons had to be reloaded manually after each shot. The ammunition that was inserted through the opening of the barrel consisted of gunpowder, the projectile and a wad of paper that served as a cover to compress the other two components of the barrel.
In combat, these weapons were usually used for one shot, as reloading was very slow and there was usually no time for it. Therefore, combatants had to draw their sabres or swords or use the pistol as manslaughter if they could not reload in time.
