Medieval MARTO pike
Polearm widely used by infantry
Pike, a polearm widely used by infantry, mainly to counter cavalry attacks and charges.
Pikes were first used by the ancient Greeks in the famous phalanxes, which were large squares formed by rows of pikemen, called "foot companions". At the end of the Middle Ages, their use was reinvented by the Swiss, who were valued as mercenaries for more than two centuries. At the beginning of the Modern Age, variants appeared, with the model of the Spanish Tercios being the one that prevailed.
Clearly defensive in nature, the pike was used primarily in defensive or covering tactics: to prevent charges, slow down cavalry or defend emplacements and positions.
The end of the pike came at the beginning of the 18th century when the musket, more powerful than the arquebus, was able to carry a bayonet, serving as a lance in hand-to-hand combat, shifting the power of firearms to pikes.
