By the late 13th century, the sword was the dominant weapon of knights and men-at-arms. However, with the advent of plate armour , its dominance on the battlefield began to crumble, as it simply wasn't designed to pierce or bleed through this new type of armour. This is where the war hammer or battle hammer came into play...
The war hammer was arguably the ideal weapon against opponents clad in plate armour. The heavy hammer head could massively dent helmet and armour with just a few blows and the hammer would open this armour like a modern can opener. As a rule, the hammer head was first used in combat to knock the enemy down and render them unable to fight. Once the fallen and helpless opponent was on the ground, the hammer was turned around and the blow used to pierce their helmet and deliver the finishing blow.
Cold Steels® modern interpretation of the war hammer is already very popular with martial artists and HEMA reenactors. This battle hammer is very agile and easy to wield with one or both hands. The head is forged from 1055 carbon steel and differentially hardened. This means that the tip of the mandrel and the face of the hammer are fully hardened to pierce and break through hard material, while the rest of the head is kept softer to better cushion violent blows. The approximately 30" long handle is made from straight grain American hickory wood and is supplied with two heavy duty steel springs.
