Roman Gladio Mainz type with scabbard, 1st century AD
The gladius, the standard weapon of Rome's legionaries between the 3rd century BC and the 3rd century AD, has been used in many different versions over the centuries. Although primarily designed for stabbing, the feared Roman short sword was also an extremely effective slashing weapon. Over the course of the middle and late Roman Imperial period, however, it was gradually replaced by the longer spathe.
This Roman sword is not an exact replica of an archaeological find, but a reconstruction of a classical Mainz-type gladius from the early 1st century. Characteristic of this type of gladius, which was named after the place where the first gladii of this species was found, was the double-edged, slightly "notched" blade with a long point.
The Gladius offered here has a typical "Mainz" blade made of EN45 spring steel (neither hardened nor heat-treated) with a flat, diamond-shaped cross-section and a long, pointed tip. The cutting edges are not sharpened and the continuous blade tang is screwed into the end of the handle (brass threaded nut). The hilt is made of bone, the guard and pommel are made of wood. The guard is fitted with a brass plate on the side of the blade.
The one-handed Roman is delivered with a red wooden/leather scabbard with brass fittings (a mouth band, three horizontal bands, edge garnitures and a V-shaped cape decorated with a palmette, ending with a chaplet). Cast brass support rings are attached to the two upper straps, which allow the wearer to carry his gladius with him like a true Roman.
It should be noted that this sword is not suitable for display combat. It is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
