Lorica Squamata, Roman scale armor
We offer a high quality reconstruction of a Roman scale armor, the so-called Lorica Squamata .
This armour, which is typical of Roman cavalry of the imperial era, consists of many small brass plates which are sewn to a vest made of strong canvas and leather, like fish scales, and interlaced with wire on the long sides. This was to prevent opposing blades from being able to pierce between the metal plates. The shape, size and also the material of the scales were very different. More than 30 different shapes and types have been found at Carnuntum, the capital of the Roman province of Pannonia. Our scale armour is the short-cut version, which was worn around 100 to 250 AD.
The Lorica Squamata is tied at the side and neck using leather straps.
