This Roman lantern is based on historical originals from the 1st to 3rd centuries AD, some of which were found in Pompeii, parts of England, and present-day Libya. In this later type of lamp, olive oil was primarily used as a fuel source. Although such lamps were primarily made in Italy, this style was copied in places by craftsmen in Britain and other parts of the world.
The cylindrical frame of the lamp, which rests
The lantern is made of brass and stands on three feet. It consists of a massive bottom plate connected by two vertical load-bearing struts. These in turn are riveted to the top ring. A dome-shaped lid with decorative ventilation openings is attached to the struts by means of chains and rests firmly on the top ring thanks to two notches on the edge of the lid. To carry or hang the lantern, a brass handle/loop is attached to the lid with a third chain. The body is covered with real rawhide (parchment). This has further small ventilation holes, which also allow the light to shine through and provide a uniquely soft and pleasantly warm glow.
Inside, the oil container is fully
The removable lid is attached to the base of the lantern with a simple key. The container consists of three parts: reservoir, wick holder and lid with ventilation holes. However, this finely crafted oil lantern also offers other lighting options: Since both the wick holder and the lid can be completely removed at will, a tea light or a larger candle can be used as an alternative light source.
The lamp can be hung, simply used outdoors or placed on a table or flat surface, making it extremely
versatile. At night, the lantern creates a pleasant atmosphere both inside and outside.
