Spear of the African Samburu people
- regular version -
2017 model, SK-5 carbon steel
The Samburu of Kenya's harsh northern frontier are a semi-nomadic people of tall, thin people who make their living as herders, goat-, donkey-, camel- and cattle-herders. The warriors of this tribe, known as the Lmuran , are particularly striking: they never cut their long, braided hair and paint their faces and torsos in beautiful, elaborate patterns using a cosmetic mixture of animal fat and red ochre.
Given the constant threat to the flocks and herds from predators and outlaw shiftas (bandits) who can attack at any moment, they rarely venture out of their kraal (small fenced settlement) unarmed. Any warrior worthy of the name would be inconceivable to be caught without a spear.
The Samburu Warrior Throwing Spear, measuring over 2 meters in length, is the most advanced and state-of-the-art spear of its kind in the world. This spear could be described as the .300 Winchester Magnum of the spear world. It can be used from a great distance, fly in a straight line, assume a flat trajectory, hit hard and penetrate deeply. Cold Steel was inspired by the Samburu tribe's spear and developed its own version made from modern materials.
Each Cold Steel Samburu Spear consists of three composable elements:
- the sharp, leaf-shaped spearhead welded to a strong steel shaft;
- the opposite, compensating tip (also called shoe ), which can serve as an alternative tip during throwing training to protect the blade itself for more important occasions;
- the black walnut handle, which serves as a connecting piece between the tip and the shoe and is tapered at both ends.
For easy transport, the Samburu spear is delivered disassembled. The spearhead and shoe only need to be connected to the handle and screwed together using the supplied fastening material. A Secure-Ex® sheath is included in the scope of delivery.
Note: When manufacturing the Samburu spear, Cold Steel attaches great importance to the greatest possible robustness. If the shaft or shoe still bends, the spear can be easily straightened with a vice or hammer . The solid walnut handle could break sooner or later and would have to be replaced. SK-5 carbon steel
Japanese SK-5 carbon steel has traditionally been used in the manufacture of a variety of hand tools such as chisels and wood saws. Due to its high universal toughness, excellent edge retention and excellent abrasion resistance, this steel has proven itself in many countries.
