The doublet is a tight-fitting jacket or vest for men. The origin of this garment is the Franconian doublet, which was worn as an undergarment from the 14th century.

From the 15th century onwards, the doublet appeared as an upper garment in Spanish fashion and since then it spread throughout Europe. Typical for this type of garment were the close-fitting cut, a small high collar and a seam at the waist. It was mostly luxuriously decorated and made of high-quality fabrics.

The doublet reached down to the waist or down to the hips and was partly provided with an attached lap. The attached lap covered the transition to the trousers, which were attached directly to the doublet with ribbons. Sometimes the sleeves were only attached to the shoulders with pegs and could therefore be removed or changed. Not all doublets had sleeves, so the doublet (also called jerkin in English) was the predecessor of our current waistcoat. The front center was usually closed with numerous buttons (a laced front center was more common with the predecessor, the doublet). The stomach or chest area was often emphasized and filled out, as was the fashion at the time.

The doublet was paired with a white shirt and bowler hats. Numerous Spanish portraits from the late Middle Ages provide evidence of the doublet, and even some originals have survived from this period.

Our lined velvet doublet (100% cotton) does not reach all the way to the hips. Appliquéd ribbons, high-quality ball buttons and attached shoulder flaps make it clear that it is designed for festive occasions. The attached lap is cut out and has concealed embroidered buttonholes in the front. The buttonholes allow the trousers to be pinned directly.

The elegant doublet is ideal for representing wealthy positions and enhances any costume.

As for velvet, it can be added that it appeared in the Mediterranean region in the 14th century and was woven mainly in Italy. The elaborate design turned velvet tunics into an exclusive item.

Details:

- Color: black
- Material: 100% cotton (velvet)
- Total length for size L: approx. 58.5 cm (measured at the center of the back)

Cotton velvet should not be put in the washing machine, as the velvet will wrinkle irrevocably. Velvet should also not be ironed, as this will cause the pile to lose its depth. We recommend brushing light stains with the clothes brush in the direction of the pile. In the case of coarser dirt, we recommend that you send the vest to the dry cleaners.
