Renaissance-style Hanpei Rapiers have their origins in early 17th-century Europe. In those times, rapier fencing was an essential part of male education and was often used to settle disputes between nobles. Typically, blades from the Toledo or Solingen forging centers were supplied by regional smiths with handles, leading to many different designs.

To enhance the effectiveness of the rapier, the so-called "Gauche Principal" was used in conjunction with its use as a fencing dagger or left-handed companion dagger. Daggers allow for better defense against the attack of the épée swords, but at the same time also offer the possibility of a quick counterattack.
