Like many other historic battlefield weapons, the English bill hook (also known as the bill hook or hippe or Kriegshippe / Kriegsheppe ) traces its origins back to agriculture. Farmers used this old forestry tool to reach hard-to-reach climbing plants and branches, clear dense foliage and, if necessary, cut through large branches. It didn't take much imagination to realise the possibilities this heavy-duty implement would offer as a weapon.

As the hip was used more and more in combat, it became a reliable fighting instrument. Its expanded form, with sharp edges and hook-shaped blades, was fast, agile, and relentless. In the right hands, a good warship could easily hook, off-balance, thrust, stab, slash, and chop, and even take on heavily armed and mounted opponents. The sight of an armed force standing rank upon rank with these weapons was terrifying!
