Cold Steel® Tomahawks are precision-forged from 1055 carbon steel. In the manufacture of impact tools, especially those equipped with a cutting edge, stamping offers many clear advantages. With the help of several dies (hollow moulds/die), which are connected to massive forging hammers, the steel is shaped step by step into a completely homogeneous mass and pressed to achieve a uniform grain and minimise the formation of defects. All Cold Steel® Tomahawks are also differentially hardened: the cutting edge and striking surface of the hammer are fully hardened so that they can be sharpened, while the rest of the head is kept softer to cushion shocks and impacts.
The American Tomahawk Company® is a registered trademark and a company of Cold Steel®, Inc.
Spontoon Hawks
Although most tomahawks were designed as chopping or splitting tools, a less common variant, the Spontoon Tomahawk, also existed . Its blade, which was specifically designed for stabbing, could cause stab wounds that were often fatal. Typically, this axe had a diamond-shaped blade or a slanted blade that was sharpened on both sides. Thus, it was almost useless as a tool for everyday use, but as a weapon it was probably terrifying and cruelly effective.
Modern Spontoon Hawks are extremely rare today (apart from substandard imports), and Cold Steel® has decided to address this shortcoming. New models available are quite classic with either a slanted ( angled ) or diamond ( diamond ) blade. They are fully sharpened and have a hammer head that mimics the appearance of the bowl of a traditional tomahawk.1055
carbon steel
The carbon content and relatively small proportions of other substances in this steel make it a very stable material that is free from the brittleness inherent in most high-carbon steels. This steel is ideal for blades that are supposed to have high impact resistance and is therefore often used for large knives , machetes and swords .
