A 15th century weapons master said that hands are a difficult target to hit because their best defense lies in their movement. It is true that in fencing one protects one's hands against one's opponent, but in the heat of a skirmish, when the clashes are multitudinous and blows can come from anywhere, a simple clash of weapons could leave one's fingers in a bad state. This is why gauntlets are considered indispensable in recreation and mass combat, both now and then.
Gauntlets in the mid-14th century were usually short-bodied and unjointed, allowing movement of the wrist due to the hourglass shape that some, such as the one we offer here, had. Examples of gauntlets similar to these can be seen in various representations throughout the 14th and 15th centuries, demonstrating the reliability of their design.
