Pompeii type Roman gladius with scabbard

The 1st century AD Pompeii type Roman gladius with scabbard (0180010800) is a historical representation of one of the most iconic swords of the Roman era. The gladius was the standard issue weapon of legionaries between the 3rd century BC and 3rd century AD, and this version of the Pompeii type was the final evolution of the Roman short sword. The Pompeii type was named after the famous archaeological site in the Italian city of Pompeii, where the first four gladii of this type were found.

This one-handed Roman sword is a late 1st century replica, with a straight, flat blade, a triangular point and a wooden handle. The blade is forged from spring steel and is unsharpened, while the tang continues into a threaded brass end. The guard and pommel are also made from wood and the end result is a stunning replica of a historical weapon.

The sword comes with a wooden and leather scabbard adorned with brass fittings, based on archaeological finds from the collection of the Het Valkhof museum in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The mouthplate is decorated with partly tinned, partly openwork and partly engraved motifs, and the hood features a V-shaped edge with a hood, a horizontal band and an ornamental panel matching the mouthplate. A palmette is attached to the cord and cast brass support rings allow the user to carry his gladius with him no matter how authentic it is.

It is important to note that this sword is not suitable for display combat. It is designed as a collector's item or as a decorative object and is also ideal as an authentic accessory to complete a costume.

With an overall length of approximately 67.5 cm, the blade measures approximately 49 cm in length. The thickness of the blade varies between around 4.3 mm and 4 mm (the cutting edge measures approximately 1 mm) and the maximum width of the blade is approximately 4.5 cm. The centre of gravity is located approximately 13 cm from the front of the guard. With an unscabbard weight of approximately 0.6 kg and a scabbard weight of around 0.95 kg, this Pompeii-type Roman gladius replica with scabbard is an impressive piece that is both attractive and authentic.
