Fulham type Roman gladius with SI scabbard

The gladius, the standard weapon of Rome's legionaries between the 3rd century BC and the 3rd century AD, has been used in many different versions over the centuries. Although primarily designed for stabbing, the feared Roman short sword was also an extremely effective slashing weapon. Over the course of the middle and late Roman Imperial period, however, it was gradually replaced by the longer spathe.

This Roman sword is a reconstruction of a classical gladius of the Fulham (or Mainz-Fulham) type from the early 1st century. The name given to this specific type of gladius was the location of a 1st century AD sword, which was recovered from the Thames near Fulham (London) in 1883. The remains of the original, either the iron blade with a broken tang and without a handle and scabbard, or the preserved edge with crown and two decorative bronze plaques, are now in the British Museum in London.
With its parallel, straight (or sometimes slightly "notched") cutting edges and long blade point, the Fulham model is considered a transitional type between the Mainz type and the later Pompeii type. However, since both the Mainz and Fulham gladii were in use at the same time in the first half of the 1st century, some historians classify the Fulham as a variation within the Mainz group.

The gladius offered here has a broad, straight, double-edged blade made of EN45 spring steel (neither hardened nor heat-treated) with a flat, diamond-shaped cross-section and a long, pointed tip. The cutting edges are not sharpened and the continuous blade tang is screwed into the end of the handle (brass threaded nut). The hilt is made of wood and the guard is fitted with a brass plate on the side of the blade.

The Fulham one-handed sword is delivered with a brown wooden/leather scabbard with brass protective fittings (a mouth band, three horizontal bands and a frame or a continuous side edge ending with a button). Cast brass support rings are attached to the two upper straps, which allow the user to carry his gladius with him like a true Roman.

It should be noted that this sword is not suitable for display combat. It is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
