Richard the Lionheart, King of England, was a benefactor and magnate of the Knights Templar, so much so that his personal escort was made up of Knights Templar and at his death he is said to have been dressed in their habit. Richard was called the Lionheart at the beginning of the Third Crusade when Philip of France compared himself to a lamb and Richard to a lion. He convinced his officers at Winchester, around the "round table" that he belonged to the legend of King Arthur and that he had the magic sword Excalibur. Richard was a generous knight and a prudent politician, but above all a great soldier. His own personal ability was a source of inspiration to his men in battle.
