Viking Rus sword

The Viking Rus sword, Petersen Type E1, Gnezdovo, C-15 Barrow, 9th century, is a beautiful piece from the Viking Age. This single-handed sword is a reproduction of an archaeological find discovered in 1874 at the archaeological complex of Gnёzdovo, near Smolensk, Russia. The original piece was remarkably well preserved and was found stuck in the ground near the urn containing the cremated remains of its presumed owner. The original sword was classified as Type E1 according to Petersen's Viking sword typology.

The modern reconstruction offered here has a straight, double-edged, tempered 1060 high carbon steel blade with broad, long, unsharpened edges. The engravings on the blade are reproductions of the markings found on the original blade. The hilt is composed of a short, lenticular brass guard, a wooden grip firmly bound in brown leather, and a heavy, generously sized brass pommel. The engravings on the guard and pommel closely recreate the "stippled" or "pitched" pattern of the original artifact. The pommel of the sword is a two-part construction: the full tang of the blade is anchored to the lower section, and the pommel cap is secured to the base by means of two rivets. Both components of the pommel are visually separated by braided wire. In addition, between the three segments of the cap, there are recesses inlaid with braided wire.

This early medieval single-handed sword comes complete with a fitted brown leather and wooden scabbard with antique brass throat, veneer and belt loop (maximum belt width 6cm). Please note that this sword is not a battle-ready weapon. It is intended as a collector's item or as decoration/display and is not suitable for combat reenactment. In addition to its quality as a collector's item, it is also perfectly suited as an accessory to complete costumes.

The blade material is 1060 high carbon tempered steel (not stainless) with a Rockwell hardness of approximately 48-52 HRC. The overall length of the sword is approximately 97 cm, with a blade length of approximately 79 cm. The thickness of the blade is approximately 5 mm (cutting edges approximately 1 mm), and the hilt length is approximately 18 cm (hilt approximately 10 cm). The maximum width of the blade is approximately 5.8 cm, and the balance point is located approximately 11 cm from the guard. The weight without scabbard is approximately 1.8 kg, and the weight with scabbard is approximately 2.4 kg. It is important to note that specifications may vary slightly from piece to piece.

The steel used in this sword is not rust-proof and may show slight surface tarnishing in places. Therefore, it is recommended that the blade is regularly maintained using Ballistol Universal Oil, which is ideal for the care of steel. This sword is certainly an ideal piece for collectors and lovers of medieval history.
