Viking sword Langeid 501821

The Langeid Viking Sword is a faithful replica of one of the most amazing and unique swords ever discovered in Norway, unearthed in 2011 during road construction in the Setesdal Valley. This archaeological find astonished the world, as although thousands of Viking Age swords have been found in Norway, none had such an elaborate hilt or enigmatic inscriptions as Langeid's. Dating back to around 1030, this sword stands out for both its impeccable state of preservation and its exceptional craftsmanship.

Historical Features and Mystery of the Inscriptions:

  • Unknown but Prestigious Origin: It is not known for certain whether this sword was made in Norway or was an Anglo-Saxon weapon obtained from somewhere far away, but what is certain is that it belonged to a high-ranking Viking warrior, who treasured it as a work of mortal art. Its hilt decorated in gold and copper shows inscriptions in a combination of Latin characters, Christian symbols and runes, the meanings of which have not yet been fully deciphered.
  • Mysterious Symbolism: Among the inscriptions, letters such as "R" stand out, which could refer to "Rex" (king), and "X", which could symbolize "Xristos" (Christ). In addition, there is a representation of a hand holding a cross on the pommel, which could allude to the hand of Jesus or God, suggesting a deep religious connection of the warrior with Christianity. This mixture of Latin, Christian and runic symbols makes this sword an object of mystery and historical importance.

Design and Construction of the Replica:

  • Carbon Steel Blade: The blade of the Langeid Viking Sword is forged from 1080 high carbon steel, designed to be tough and combat-ready, just like the original sword. Measuring 81 cm in length and 0.5 cm thick, this blade has the sturdiness to stand up to the demands of battle.
  • Gold and Copper Decorated Pommel and Guard: The silver-plated steel pommel and guard are adorned with gold and copper details, faithfully replicating the original symbols found on the unearthed sword. These details give the sword a touch of luxury and authenticity, recreating its stunning original appearance.
  • Improved Hilt for Comfort: Although the original hilt was only 9cm in length, one of the shortest ever recorded among Viking swords, this replica has been enlarged to provide greater comfort for the modern user. However, it has remained true to the original design, with a hand-braided wire wrap, recreating the pattern that would have been wielded by a Viking over a thousand years ago.
