The Haithabu Viking sword with scabbard dating back to the 9th century is a faithful recreation of the original, found intact in a grave at the same location. Experts believe it belonged to a Danish nobleman or a Viking warrior of great wealth. Today, the find is on display at the Haithabu Viking Museum and is a popular tourist attraction.
The design of the sword is a classic example of a one-handed Viking sword, with typical features of the High Middle Ages, such as a straight, double-edged blade, a short quillon, a fuller width, and a distinctive pommel with several ridges. This replica presents these elements in a detailed and accurate manner.
The sword's blade is crafted from Damascus steel, giving it a distinctive appearance and unique pattern. The blade edges are not sharpened for safety, and the blade tang is riveted to the pommel. The wooden-core handle is wrapped in red leather and decorated with decorative brass rings at both ends. The quillons and pommel are also crafted from brass and feature intricately engraved patterns and motifs, just as seen on the original artifact.
Each sword is presented with a red leather and wood scabbard that features high quality brass fittings, a guard cape and a belt loop for a perfect fit. The approximate measurements of the sword are 90 cm in total length, 73 cm in blade length, 4 mm in blade thickness and 5 cm in maximum width. The centre of gravity is located 12 cm from the guard and the total weight of the sword is around 2 kg.
It is important to note that this sword is not intended to be used in actual combat or for display practice. Rather, this one-handed sword is a collector's item and is recommended for use as a decorative object or costume accessory.
Furthermore, since Damascus steel is not stainless, slight signs of corrosion may be observed over time. It is therefore recommended to regularly care for the blade and scabbard of the sword with specialized products such as Ballistol, a universal oil that protects and preserves steel products.
In short, the Haithabu Viking Sword with Scabbard is an authentic recreation of a highly valuable historical sword, designed for use as a collectible, decorative or costume accessory.
