The sword Roland, or Durandarte, is one of the most important icons in the history of European literature and culture. A gift from the Frankish Emperor Charlemagne to his loyal commander, Roland, this magical sword played a key role in the epic battle of Roncesvalles in 778 and in the legend that formed around the heroic figure of the paladin.
Roland was a historical commander of the Franks, and count of the March of Brittany. He died in the battle of Roncesvalles at the hands of the Basques on 15 August 778. Charlemagne's troops, returning from the siege of Saragossa, suffered an attack at the Pyrenean pass of Roncesvalles by Basque tribes aided by Muslims. But, through legend, Roland became the paladin, who with his magic sword "Durandarte" and the horn "Oliphant", faced 100,000 Saracens and opened a pass between the Pyrenean mountains that is still called "Bréche de Roland".
The sword Durandarte, which accompanied Roland until his death at the Battle of Roncesvalles, was an object that played a key role in legend. According to tradition, Roland's sword held several sacred relics, including a tooth of St. Peter, blood of St. Basil, hair of St. Denis, and a cloak of St. Mary. The quality of this legendary weapon was such that, in legend, Roland tried to break Durandarte to prevent it from falling into enemy hands, but instead, the sword cut the rock in two.
After Roland's death, the Durandarte sword found its way into several different legends and places. According to some versions of the legend, Roland threw the sword into Lake Carucedo before he died to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. Another legend tells that the Leonese knight Bernardo del Carpio defeated Roland and took the Durandarte sword; he was subsequently buried with it at Peña Longa. Charles I of Spain, upon learning of the sword's existence, passed by Bernardo del Carpio's grave, took the sword, and carried it with him for much of his life.
The Roland sword is one of the most majestic historical swords and is part of the exclusive "Historical, Fantastic and Legendary Swords" Collection manufactured by the prestigious Marto company in the city of Toledo, Spain.
