Riding Sword "Model 1844" Civil Guard Officer - 345000S
The "Model 1844" Riding Sword for Civil Guard Officers is a unique piece included in the Spanish coat of arms. This emblem displays the shield flanked by the initials GC and reproduces the insignia of a corps, with a tri-quill guard, manufactured specifically for Civil Guard Officers.
Created at the beginning of the Civil Guard Corps under the direction of the Duke of Ahumada, the first regulation on the use and allocation of bladed weapons was issued, which stipulated that for the Infantry forces a "Sabre of those used by the Army Infantry" would be adopted, while for the Cavalry forces, a "Line Sword" would be assigned.
The Duke of Ahumada, concerned about the correct and honorable use of arms, dictated "several times some Guards have drawn their sabers against unarmed civilians... every Civil Guard must bear in mind the motto of the old Spanish swords - do not draw me without reason nor sheathe me without honor - and there can rarely be cause to draw it against an unarmed civilian" (Circular 4/08/1846).
By founding order, it was planned to provide all Civil Guards of Cavalry or Infantry with their corresponding sabre (RO25/08/1848) and the Duke of Ahumada, in 1850, dictated that the orders were made directly by the leaders of the Tercios to the Toledo Factory and that it was observed that they bore the true motto of the establishment because "in many workshops in the foreign kingdom they are falsified by putting the label of the Toledo Factory".
From then on, swords and sabers were designed and manufactured to be carried by Civil Guards, and the "Model 1844 Riding Sword for Civil Guard Officers" was one of the first bladed weapons of the Civil Guard Corps manufactured in the prestigious Toledo Bladed Weapons Factory.
The officers of the Civil Guard's Cavalry units were issued, in keeping with the custom of the period, with a unique model of riding sword. The use of the riding sword was complemented by the girdle sword during dismounted ceremonies.
The 1844 model riding sword for a Civil Guard Officer features a straight blade with grooves and a rounded back on the first third, while the remaining two-thirds feature two edges all the way to the tip. The brass guard features a continuous snub-nose, a ferrule and handguard with a ring, three quillons, and the national coat of arms between the Institute's initials "GC." The hilt is wired.
It features a metal sheath and two clamps with corresponding rings for belt attachment. Its total length is 105 cm/41 inches.
