The Ashbringer is a powerful sword, known for its effectiveness against the undead. Its first wielder was Highlord Alexandros Mograine, former Knight of the Silver Hand, whose determination against the Scourge gave the weapon its name. Magni Bronzebeard forged the blade, infusing it with anger and vengeance for the death of his brother Muradin when Arthas betrayed him. When he was finished, he gave Mograine the finest blade his hands had ever created.

Alexandros' eldest son, Renault, betrayed him and killed him using the sword, transforming it into the Corrupted Ashbringer. When Alexandros was resurrected as a Death Knight, he was given his original corrupted sword until his youngest son Darion's foray into Naxxramas killed him. Darion later discovered that his father's soul had become corrupted and bound to the sword, and in an attempt to save him, he plunged it into his father's heart. Though Alexandros' soul was eventually redeemed, Darion had by then become a Death Knight. Long corrupted, Darion managed to purify it when he betrayed the Lich King and gave it to Tirion during the Battle for Light's Hope Chapel.

The Ashbringer is one of the most coveted items in the game by World of Warcraft players, although it has never been available to players. Although its history has been present since the launch of World of Warcraft, it was not until Wrath of the Lich King that it really got its moment.
