The Scutum is the iconic shield used by Roman legionaries, whose shape and design were key to the effectiveness of the military formations of the time. This shield was essential not only for defense but also for offensive maneuvers during combat, such as the famous testudo (tortoise) formation, which allowed legionaries to advance under almost impenetrable protection. The Scutum not only protected against arrows, javelins, and stones thrown from above, but also easily deflected direct blows thanks to its curved shape.

Design Features:

  • Curved Shape for Maximum Protection: The Scutum had a curved shape that made it ideal for absorbing and deflecting the impact of enemy blows. This shape allowed legionaries to take heavy blows without suffering serious damage, as arrows and thrown weapons were deflected instead of hitting directly with their full force.
  • Testudo (Turtle) Formation: One of the most famous aspects of the Scutum is its role in the testudo formation, where legionaries would overlap their shields both in front and above them, achieving total protection against projectiles launched in a parabola from walls or elevated positions.

Offensive Use:

  • Metal Central Umbo: The center of the shield, known as the umbo , is made of metal and could be used offensively in combat. This element was heavy and sturdy enough to stun or push opponents away, opening up space for the legionary's next attack with his gladius .
  • Reinforced Metal Edges: The shield's edge is covered with brass reinforcement, which not only increases the shield's durability, but also allowed legionaries to use it offensively, striking enemies with the metal edges.
