The Scutum is the iconic shield used by Roman legionaries, whose shape and design were key to the effectiveness of military formations of the time. This shield was essential not only for defence, but also for offensive manoeuvres during combat, such as the famous testudo (tortoise) formation, which allowed legionaries to advance under almost impenetrable protection. The Scutum not only protected against arrows, javelins and stones thrown from above, but also deflected direct blows with ease thanks to its curved shape.

Design Features:

  • Curved Shape for Maximum Protection: The Scutum had a curved shape that made it ideal for absorbing and deflecting the impact of enemy blows. This shape allowed legionaries to take heavy blows without suffering serious damage, as arrows and throwing weapons were deflected instead of hitting directly with full force.
  • Testudo (Tortoise) Formation: One of the most famous aspects of the Scutum is its role in the testudo formation, where legionaries would superimpose their shields both towards the front and above them, achieving total protection against projectiles launched in a parabola from walls or elevated positions.

Offensive Use:

  • Central Metal Umbo: The center of the shield, known as the umbo , was made of metal and could be used offensively in combat. This element was heavy and robust enough to stun or push opponents away, opening space for the legionary's next attack with his gladius .
  • Reinforced Metal Edges: The edge of the shield is coated with a brass reinforcement, which not only increases the shield's durability, but also allowed legionaries to use it offensively, striking enemies with the metal edges.

Construction and Materials:

  • Made of Hand Painted Wood: This Scutum is made of wood, carefully hand painted to replicate the authentic look of shields used during the Roman Empire. This detail makes it a valuable piece for both historical reenactments and displays.
  • Reinforced at the Back: The shield is reinforced at the back with thin strips of wood, giving it greater strength without sacrificing lightness.
  • Handle Built into the Umbo: The handle is located at the rear of the central metal umbo , allowing the legionary to hold the shield firmly while maintaining an effective combat stance.

  • Material: Hand painted wood with brass reinforcement on the edges
  • Umbo: Made of metal with rear handle
  • Rear reinforcements: Wooden strips
  • Measurements: 107 cm high x 55 cm wide
