The Targe of the Scottish Highlanders was not only an effective tool for defense against enemy attacks, but also very effective as an attack weapon .
The Hand-Targe on offer here is a scaled-down version of the famous Highland Targen, best known for its use by the Jacobites (the supporters of the displaced Stuart King James II and his descendants) in Scotland in the late 17th and 18th centuries. Its lavish decoration is inspired by several original historical pieces.
Although this handmade mini-Targe is only half the size of a classic Scottish round shield, it is in no way inferior to its larger counterparts. It is made of wood and covered with processed genuine leather, which is fixed all around with brass rivets. A brass boss is attached in the middle of the shield. The beautifully decorated front is lavishly decorated with relief in the Celtic style and studded with numerous decorative rivets made of brass. The back of the shield, which is covered with suede, is provided with two so-called shield shackles (fastening straps) made of strong, sturdy leather, which are firmly fixed in position with brass rivets.
This little Scottish Targe is simply a perfect accessory for reenactors and collectors.
