This 7m long piece of cotton ribbon in herringbone binding has been woven on an extra narrow loom and therefore has particularly beautiful woven edges. It is 10cm wide and can be used as a calf wrap, belt or decorative border. The 7m band length is exactly enough for a couple of calf wraps.
The ribbons with woven patterns were very
popular throughout the Middle Ages and even earlier. They were a status symbol and sometimes very elaborately worked. The edges, usually made in plank weave, adorned the upper garment in hems and cutouts. Calf wraps (leg wraps, wrap leggings) were also made on narrow looms. They were an integral part of Germanic clothing and were wrapped from foot to knee over trousers and served as a replacement for socks. They not only warmed, but also protected the legs from injury. Both men and women wore calf wraps. Characteristic of the herringbone (also called herringbone) is the small pattern, which
It is reminiscent of wheat ears or spikes. This connection is particularly evident when two different colours are used in the chain and weft. The weave makes the fabric crosswise elastic, so that calf wraps made of herringbone connection can be put on particularly beautifully.
This type of binding was widely used, e.g. at Haithabu and Birka.
